Death and Burial
Nicolas Rochon was lost under the ice near Montréal a few days before Ash Wednesday on 26 Feb 1727. He was transported by Father J. Lelièvre and others, almost certainly after the ice melted, and buried on 22 Apr 1727 in Saint-Thomas church cemetery of Montmagny. In the presence of known witnesses Pierre Bellanger, Guillaume Thibault, and Louis Valcour Morin. Internment priest was J. Lelièvre. For identification purposes the priest lists that on the body of Nicolas was a chinchilla hood, a white cloth jacket, wearing a white cloth jacket, a carise vest and on the front of which was a blue and red indian piece, a scapular of the Malamay Gaiters, white stockings, pumps, an indian belt and a cotton handkerchief, a small purse but empty, a pewter cup, a knife, a calumet with two small cassette keys attached to the button hole jacket, his hair was padlocked with a black ribbon][4]Said description kind of gives one a good idea of how the French men dressed back then. The definition of a calumet is an American Indian peace pipe.
