Helen (or Elena) was born c1550 in Killaloe, County Clare, Ireland. She was the daughter of Maurice Roche, 1st Viscount Fermoy, by his first wife Eleanor FitzGerald, 1st dau. of Sir Maurice FitzJohn FitzGerald, Lord of Kerricurrihy (by his wife Sile O'Mulrian, dau. of Diarmid O'Mulrian, of Sulloghode, co. Tipperary), brother of James FitzJohn FitzGerald, 13th Earl of Desmond.
She married Donough O'Brien, 3rd Earl of Thomond, son of Conor O'Brien, 2nd Earl of Thomond and Una O'Brien, after September 1577 and had a daughter, Margaret O'Brien.
Helen died in 1583, without male issue. She was buried at Ennis Abbey.
