Edith Annie Rigby was born 4 May 1868 in Leigh. She was the daughter of Thomas Rigby and Margaret (Hulme) Rigby.
By April 2nd 1871, Thomas was living in Plane Lane, Abram, in the Glass Works yard. He was still working as the glass works manager. The three children were all still alive, and the two older ones were now in school. The family had a seventeen-year-old domestic servant, Mary Ann Wood, who was from Abram.
Thomas and Margaret's fourth and last child, Thomas Stock Rigby, was born 3 Oct 1871 in Firs Lane.
According to a member of the Rigby family, Thomas (senior) had episodes of drinking heavily and eventually disappeared, which perhaps explains the difficulty in finding his death registration between 1871 and 1881 in Wigan area.
By April 3rd 1881, Margaret was living in Off Plane Lane, Gores Houses, and was reporting herself a widow. All four of the children were still alive; Herbert was working as a glass maker, the two girls as creelers at a cotton mill, and Thomas was still in school.
Herbert got married on Christmas Day 1886.
Mary Ellen married John Taylor in 1889. John probably died the same year, and Mary returned to live with her mother.
By April 5th 1891, Margaret was living at 7 Common Lane, Westleigh, with her widowed daughter Mary Ellen, and her two unmarried children Edith and Thomas. There were also three male lodgers in the household, one of whom, Hugh Jones, was later to marry Mary Ellen. The two girls were working as cotton card loofer/tenters. Thomas was working as a machine (followed by something illegible). The three lodgers were all colliers.
Mary Ellen married Hugh Jones on 27 Aug 1892.
Edith married Henry Collier in 1892 in Leigh district, in a registrar-attended ceremony.
By March 31st 1901, Henry and Edith were living in Hey Street, Ince. Henry was working as a goods guard (on the trains) and they had three children - Mary (7), Ivy Hilda (3) and baby Esther Ellen.
By April 2nd 1911, they were living in Wigan district. Henry was still working as a railway goods guard. Mary, now 17, was working as a cotton weaver.
Edith died in 1962 in Fylde district, aged 93.
