Christoffel Rieken was born on 22 December 1844 at Nijmegen, Gelderland, Netherlands. He was the son of Derk Rieken and Theodora Hoophof.

On 19 December 1867, at Nijmegen, aged 22, he married Elisabeth Wilhelmina Klomp, aged 23. He was a bricklayer's assistant.
