Biography

Johann Georg Riebell was probably born in Anweiler, Rheinland-Pfalz in about 1708.[1] It was part of Bavaria at the time, although it is now known as Annweiler am Trifels, Südliche Weinstraße, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. He married Anna Eva in Germany,[2] and his daughter Maria Barbara was born there.[3][4] He arrived in Colonial Philadelphia from Rotterdam with his wife & one year old daughter Maria Barbara on September 29, 1733 aboard the Mary.[5] On the ship's passenger list, his name is spelled Riebell.[6]
From there, they moved north and east to Tewksbury Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, (known as West Jersey at the time). He rented a farm between Oldwick and Fairmount in a district known as Fox Hill.[7] He appeared on the list of Pastor Weygand's call in 1749 for the Lutheran churches in the area, listed as Johannes Rubel, and as one of the "Foxenburger" members who were subscribers to build a barn in 1754. He is listed there as George Rubel. Also on this list was George (Dipple) Teeple.[8] His name also appears in the Tewksbury Township Minute Books in both 1757 and 1760 as overseer of Fox Hill Road.[9][10]
On September 1, 1760, George Ribble purchased 400 acres in Knowlton Township, Sussex County from Lewy Corkindawl. The purchase price was £250.[11] The property was just north of the hill known as Manunkachunk, just inside the boundaries of the township, with frontage on the Delaware River.[12] George died barely three years later and it is uncertain if he ever lived on the new property. His 1763 will still identifies him as a resident of Tewksbury township. But the will clearly leaves the land to his three sons - Anthony, John George and William.[13]
