Obituary [5]

The Young Chronicle, Tuesday 20 April 1915 - Page 2

MR. J. D. RICHARDSON.

For the past few weeks it was considered that Mr. John Daniel Richardson, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Richardson, of Young, had very little hope of recovery from the internal malady which had confined him to his bed in a very low state of health. The therefore not unexpected end came on Saturday morning, at his home in Lovell-street.

The deceased, who was 49 years of age, was an honest, hard-working man, and was highly thought of by all those who knew him. He was born at Young, and spent all his years here. At the age of 21 years he married Miss Sarah Woods, who survives him, and since then his greatest concern had been for his wife and family, for whom he had labored hard and long. His widow and four sons and one daughter will feel the loss of a kind husband and father a very great one. The eldest son (Fred) is married to a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Deasey, of this town, but the youngest is only a babe, and still requires much care from the mother.

About four or five months ago the deceased began to feel the dire effects of the malady which caused his end. Ever since he began to shift for himself he followed the calling of a blacksmith, which trade he learnt from his father. For a decade or more he was in business on his own account. But the malady finally bore him down and he was compelled to remain in his bed. Gradually he became worse, though given the best or care and attention, until finally he was called away across the Great Divide.

About 21 years ago he became a member of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, for which society he was always a great worker. For about 14 years he held the position or guardian in the local lodge, and then was put through the chairs by his fellow members and became a Past Noble Grand of the Order. His record as a regular attendant at lodge meetings was one of which both he and the lodge could always feel proud. What the lodge members thought of him as an Oddfellow was fully exemplified at the funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon, when fully 70 of them marched in the solemn procession behind his remains as they were carried to their last resting place. Every other Friendly Society in the town was also represented.

The funeral as a whole was a large one. The Rev. S. A. T. Champion read the Church of England service at the graveside, and Messrs Patterson Bros carried out the funeral arrangements. Genuine and widespread sympathy is felt for the sorrowing widow and family. Messrs G. R. Richardson (Young), E. Richardson (Grenfell), and W. Richardson were brothers of the deceased. M? ? Obituary [6]

Molong Express and Western District Advertiser Saturday 24 April 1915 - Page 9

DEATH OF JOHN RICHARDSON.

A well-known visitor to Molong, in the person of Mr. John Richardson, passed away last Saturday, at his residence in Young, where he resided during the greater part of his lifetime. He was in the habit of visiting Molong at regular intervals, and married Sarah, a daughter of Mrs J. Woods, of "Sunnyside," 26 years ago. He was thus related to a number of local residents, Mesdames. Wm. Woolbank, Silas Woolbank, and Arthur Harris; being sisters-in-law, and Messrs. Andrew, Alick, Harry, and Jack Woods being brothers-in-law. All his relatives visited him during his illness, which extended over a period of four months. When the end came Mr. Andrew Woods and Mrs. W. Woolbank were present at the bedside.

Mr. Richardson was very popular with all classes, and the funeral, which took place on Sunday, was largely attended. About 200 civilians followed the hearse, on foot, in addition to 100 members of the Oddfellows' lodge, of which deceased had been a member for 24 years. Numerous vehicles and horses carrying friends were also in the funeral procession. The body was buried in the Church of England portion of the local cemetery, the Rev. Champion officiating at the graveside. A large number of handsome wreaths reposed on the coffin.

The deceased was a blacksmith and wheelwright by trade, but he had leased his business shortly after he contracted the fatal illness.

There survive, to mourn the loss of a kind husband and an indulgent father, a widow and five children—Fred, Lance, Clive, Ronald, and Dorothy. The eldest is 24 years of age, and the youngest, ten months. To these and to his local relatives and friends the EXPRESS extends its sincere sympathy.
