The body of James Rich, who mysteriously disappeared last Friday night, was found this morning by the dock police while dragging the top of the East Dock, and was conveyed to the Bute police-station. On search being made all the money and the watch, the latter stopped at a quarter to two, were found intact, in the pockets of deceased. An inquest will be held in due course.[10]

THE MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE. At the Town-hall on Tuesday Mr E. B. Reece (borough coroner) held all inquest on the body of James Rich, 2, Longcross-street, messenger in the pay department at the Bute Docks. It appeared that deceased was last seen alive by Fredk. Harbidge, near the Alexandra Hotel, at a quarter after 11 p.m. on Friday. He was then in the act of rising from the ground, and witness heard him remark that he had had a nasty fall. P.S. Sutton stated that he recovered the body that evening from the upper part of the East Dock. A watch, stopped at a quarter to 2, and about £14 were found in his pockets. Most of the money was the pay of workmen which he was charged to deliver. There were no marks of violence on the body. An open verdict was returned in this case also.[11]

James Rich was mentioned on a memorial in Cathays Cemetery, Cathays, Cardiff, Wales with a death date of 27 November 1885.[12]
