Wilfred was a cricketer, primarily a slow left-arm orthodox bowler but also a useful right-handed batsman and is classed as an all-rounder. He went on to be an opening batsman with England, partnering Jack Hobbs. He made his debut in 1898. He played 1,110 first class matches for Yorkshire and England, taking 4,204 wickets and scoring 39,969 runs, including 58 centuries. His Test record is 127 wickets in 58 games, scoring 2,325 runs (between 1899 and 1930).[1] He is the oldest player to appear in a Test match at the age of 52 years 165 days against the West Indies.

In the 1939 register, Wilfred (age 61), Professional CrIcketer Retired, was recorded as married in Yorkshire West Riding, England.[8]
He was given life membership of Yorkshire CCC in 1946 and honorary membership of Marylebone Cricket Club in 1949.
Wilfred's death was registered in 1973 in Dorset, England.[9]
He was In inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009.
