Biography

Jean Elizabeth Rextrow was born 14 December 1920 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Frances Helen (Crosscup) Cassily (1892-abt.1981) and George Anthony Rextrow (1890-1923). [1]

Jean grew up in Boston, Massachusetts where she was in an orphanage for a time after her father died and her mother had a tragic accident in which she lost her leg. Jean was not returned to her mother until her mother's remarriage in 1929 to Edward Joseph Cassily Jr. (1883-abt.1953).

Jean completed a secretarial course after graduating from high school. She then became a "Government Girl" when the U.S. government began recruiting women to fill administrative positions. She moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for the War Department.

Jean, daughter of Edward J. Cassily & Frances Cassily, married Edward William Chaillet II (1920-2002) in 1943.[2] Jean and Ed had two children.

In the 1950 census Jean (age 29) was the wife of Edward Chaillet, Jr. They were living at 125 Atlantic St., S.E., Washington, District of Columbia with their two children. Edward was a policeman with the city police department.[3]

Jean took time off of work while she raised her family. Jean and Ed divorced around 1960. Jean went back to work as a secretary for the U.S. federal government at the Department of Labor. She completed here career as Secretary to the Secretary of Labor. She retired in 1980.

Jean was a great supporter of her grandchildren. She was a fan of the Washington football team and the Boston Red Sox. She enjoyed many friends and her Lutheran church community.

Jean died (age 88) on 18 July 2009. She resided in Prince George's County, Maryland.[4]

Her ashes were returned to her beloved Charles River.
