Biography

Blandina (Claudina) was a child of Dene Ariens Relyea and Jeanne Elizabeth LeRoy. She married Jan (son of Jan) Oosteroom.

Claudina, recorded as the child of Deny Rilje and Jannetie Rilje, was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York, on 17 March 1706. She was one of a large number of children baptized that day, probably all of the children born in preceding six months, since the previous batch of children had been baptized. Witnesses to her baptism were Tys van den Berg and Divertie van den Berg.[1]

She married Jan Oosterum (also called Oosterom). Their children, as identified by Settlers of the Beekman Patent, were:[2]

  1. Jannetje, baptized at Poughkeepsie on 1 June 1725 with witnesses Hendrik Oosterom and his wife Maria Davidts.
  2. Jan, baptized 30 October 1726
  3. Blandina
  4. Dennie, baptized 14 August 1730; baptism recorded at New York Lutheran Church.
  5. Hendrick, baptized 13 March 1732 at Rhinebeck Flats with sponsors Henrick Philips and Mareitje Oosterom, died young.
  6. Simeon, married Lena Palmentier on 15 October 1769, at Poughkeepsie Reformed Church
  7. David, baptized 17 November 1737; baptism recorded at New York Lutheran Church; sponsors were David Relje and Tryntje Reinertse
  8. Roelof, baptized 9 May 1740
  9. Hendrick, baptized 8 June 1742
  10. Maria, born 12 May 1747

The 1924 article "Relyea (Reille Or Relje) Family" listed the children as follows: [3]

  1. Jannetjen, baptized at Poughkeepsie on 1 June 1725.
  2. Jan, baptized 30 October 1726 in the New York Lutheran Church.
  3. Deny, baptized 14 August 1730 in the New York Lutheran Church.
  4. Hendrick, 13 March 1732 at Lower Rhinebeck.
  5. David, baptized 17 November 1737 with witnesses David Raillie and wife Tryntje Reinertse.
  6. Roelof, baptized 9 May 1740
  7. Henrikus (or Hendrickus), baptized 8 June 1742.

Relje-4 and Relyea-12 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles seem to be the same. Approx same birth year and same child

Relje-2 and Relyea-12 appear to represent the same person because: Same husband and children. Relje/Relyea are used alternatively in records. Not sure which is preferred. But they are the same name. Her first name is shown as Blandina or Claudina in various sources. Early New Netherlands Settlers website, has "Blandina (Claudina)".
