HELENA (REIMER) NEUFELD OBITUARY
Helena (Reimer) Neufeld, daughter of Abraham J. and Helena (Neufeld) Reimer, was born December 23, 1883, in Marion County, Kansas. She spent her joyful, early years of life in the home of her parents. After receiving her catechism instruction from Elder Peter Balzer, she was baptized on the confession of her faith on May 26, 1901 (17 years old) and was received into the Alexanderwohl Congregation. She joined Jacob H. Neufeld in holy matrimony on November 4, 1909 (25 years old) after which she transferred her membership to the Tabor Congregation, where she remained the rest of her life.
She had a happy and cheerful nature, always willing to offer advice and lend a helping hand in her family circle. Therefore, our hearts are pained in grief and sorrow. Her mother, after being a widow, had a small house in our yard and although she stayed with her other daughter, at times, she was always happy to come back. Therefore, the dear deceased, with a loving and helpful nature, willingly did her share taking care of her old mother.
At the time when in 1907 (age 23), her brother Cornelius', first wife died, she sacrificed fourteen (14) months of her young life for her brother and the large family of small children. Quite often, she would share in singing songs of comfort in the twilight of the evening, in the experience of grief and sorrow and again in the morning was ready to take up her daily task. This sacrificial service will always be a loving remembrance in her brother's family.
In February, the same year (1935), the rest of our family was stricken with measles. As they turned out to be serious, she was left alone to take over nursing the family, which almost exhausted her physically. For that reason, she finally became a victim of the measles too. As her condition was getting worse, she was taken to the Bethesda Hospital (Goessel, Kansas) on April 8 to have X rays taken to find other causes of her illness. The result was not quite satisfactory, so it was decided to take another examination after she gained a little more strength. The measles, however, were so severe another X ray was not possible and inflammation of the brain set in which brought the life of our loved one to an end.
For her dying is eternal gain. In a few bright moments, she gave us the assurance of her readiness for going to her eternal home. With a weak voice and trembling lips, she uttered the name of Jesus and parts of a song. She enjoyed singing and sang many songs by heart. However, she was not spared of trials and testings and endured pain and suffering after which she entered the "Haven of Rest" on Tuesday morning at 7:30 on April 23, 1935 (age 51 years, 4 months).
Eleven brothers and sisters of the family preceded her in death, of which two were by the second marriage. One uncle and his family in California, who a few years ago escaped from Russia, survive her. They have six children of which three are by a former marriage. The grief and sorrow is most severely felt by her husband, Jacob H. Neufeld; son, Herbert; daughter, Hedwig and her husband, Arthur K. Schmidt; two daughters, Hilda and Dorothy and one adopted son, Willard. On November 4, 1934, she with her husband were privileged to celebrate their 25th anniversary in the family friendship circle. They shared joys and sorrows together in this life for 25 years, 4 months and 20 days. Now she dwells in eternity and is waiting to meet her loved ones.
Elder P. H. Richert served at the funeral, using for his text Romans 8:38, 39 and Elder P. H. Unruh used for his text Daniel 12:2.
Romans 8:38, 39 "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depths, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Daniel 12:2 "And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt." * * * * * *
