September 19, 1903 August 21, 2010 Mary Coppini peacefully passed away at the age of 106, just one month before her 107th birthday. Mary was the second child born to Joseph and Josephine Regli in Colma, CA. When Mary was three months old her family came to Eureka by steamer, were met by Joseph's sister and family, and bought a farm on Pleasant Point Road in Ferndale. Mary's formal education included Pleasant Point School, Coffee Creek School and she was in the first graduating class of Assumption School (1916) in Ferndale. After graduating Ferndale High School, she boarded with an Arcata family while attending Humboldt State Teachers College. After two years, in 1922, she was in the first graduating class from Founders Hall. After receiving her credential, her first teaching job was at Price Creek School, Ferndale. The next year she taught at Red Hill School in Covelo, CA. There she boarded with a family and rode the horse to school. Her teaching career ended in 1924 when she married Leo Coppini, a neighbor from across the fields where she grew up. Within ten years their six children were each born at their home on Coppini Lane in Ferndale: Francis, Leonard, Mary Ann, Donald, Paul and Lois. Mary and Leo were married 37 years until Leo's death in 1962. Their son Don Coppini moved back to Mary and Leo's ranch to continue raising registered Jersey animals and dairying on the J. W. Coppini Ranch. Flower and vegetable gardening, reading and playing the harmonica were favorites of Mary. For over 40 years she was an avid exhibitor at the Redwood Acres and Humboldt Co. Fair. She had boxes of blue and purple ribbons and was an annual sweepstakes winner at both fairs. She finally gave up her gardening at the age of 90. Preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph and Josephine Regli; husband, Leo; sons Francis and Paul Coppini; daughter Lois Coppini Lentz; granddaughter Sandra Coppini Albiani; great-grandsons Aaron Albiani and Phillip Weed. Being the last of her generation she also out lived her brothers Antone and John Regli; half-brother August LaCrampe; sisters Rose Mary Flynn, Anne McBride and Margaret McBride. Mary is survived by her three children: Leonard (Katherine) Coppini of Likely, CA; Donald (Donna) Coppini of Ferndale; Mary Ann Coppini Kaye of Potter Valley, CA; 26 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren. She was a member of Assumption Parish, Ferndale and a life member of the American and California Jersey Cattle Club. For their constant concern and care, the family wants to thank Ruth and Meryl at Bethal Care Home in Rio Dell and Angie and Linda at Ladies Choice Assisted Care Home in Fortuna. Special to Mary were the weekly visits by Mary Ellen Laffranchi and Florence Coppini Moore. Pall Bearers are: Jay Coppini, Tim Coppini, Tracy Coppini, Ed Coppini, Linden Lentz, Charles Kaye, David Coppini and Tom Kaye. Honorary Pall Bearers are: Leo Kaye, Joe Kaye, Lon Lentz, Dave Wright, Bob Coppini and Wally Coppini. Friends and family are invited to the recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 PM at Assumption Catholic Church, 546 Berding Street, Ferndale on Wednesday, August 25, 2010. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 26, 2010 with interment following at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Ferndale, CA. Friends my call at Gobles Fortuna Mortuary, 560 12th Street, Fortuna from 12:00 noon thru 3:00 PM on Wednesday, August 25, 2010. In Lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the Ferndale Assumption Church, 546 Berding Street, Ferndale, California. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Goble's Fortuna Mortuary.^[2]
