Biography

Phoebe (Rees-Williams) Rose has Welsh ancestors.

Phoebe was born in 1879. At that time family living at 90 Bourke St Woolloomooloo near other Smith family members. Sydney City 1887

Family were very proud of their part Welsh heritage. As can be seen on Phoebe's birth certificate David took on new surname "Rees-Williams". Phoebe gave her children Welsh names like Mervyn.

1892 Susan Rees-Williams died of Consumption(TB) at home of Harriett Hall in Woolloomooloo. Eldest child Phoebe was 13 years old.

1898 Teenage Phoebe provided palliative care for her aunty Harriett Hall dying of Consumption(TB) at their home in Newtown.

1900 Phoebe married policeman Samuel Rose in nearby Surrey Hills. Initially they lived in North Sydney, however, after 1908 they are transferred to several country towns before returning to Sydney in 1925 with Samuel never having been promoted.

1925 Agnes & Alexander McCulloch travelled extensively in Australia, donating artworks & visiting family. Agnes appears to have distributed money to her siblings. There are firm records of her buying a house for her sister Phoebe & family memories of money (perhaps £7000) being divided between the children of Susan (Smith) Rees-Williams. Similarly the Sharp family and the family of John Smith.<GR>

On retirement in 1929 they bought "Woorooma" 10 Duncan St Maroubra with £1500 from Agnes McCulloch, which raised their opinion of themselves. There were also expectations of more money from the Rose Millions Scam. This initial money & the potential for so much more entwined the family. ^[1]

1928 Sam & Mabel's wedding Narromine - No Roses present due to family being upset at Mabel being so much older & a penniless boarding house manager. She was never welcome at Sam's parents Duncan St Maroubra home. (23 years until her death). All other Rose family members also abided by this edict with the Maroubra home & inheritance at stake.<GR>

Post WW2 Dorothy & Roy Nicolson lived at 47 Glasgow Avenue Bondi, where Mabel, Bob & David had spent the war.
Before 1951 Dorothy & Roy have moved into 10 Duncan St Maroubra to care for Sam Sr & Phoebe Rose.
After the death of Sam Sr (1957), Roy (1967) & Phoebe (1971) Jean & Bruce & Kay Philllips moved in.^[2]
