Biography

1641: Thomas Dyer married Agnes Reed at Weymouth, Massachusetts.

1667: Agnes, relict of Thomas Dyer died.

Uncertain Origin

Some say Agnes was born in Butley, Somersetshire, England, two miles from Glastonbury [1], but the source cited does not have any actual references. Family histories are notorious for being erroneous.

Apparently there is no record of Agnes' maiden name. The early writers of published genealogies, such as Asa White (1801) and Harrison G. Dyer (1903) suggest that Agnes was the daughter of the immigrant Reeds of Weymouth.[2] This idea seems to be based on circumstantial evidence; Philip Reed, in his Weymouth will of 15 December 1674, mentioned Thomas Dyer as his brother.[3] Of course, we now know there could have been any number of family relationships referenced by this. It did not necessarily mean that Agnes and Philip were siblings. In the seventeenth C., relational words like "brother" were used much more broadly than they are now. For our purposes, the profiles of William Reade and Avis Chapman have been detached, but the name "Reed" retained to deter the creation of duplicates. As it turns out, that family has been confused with a different Read family and was not in Massachusetts until about 1650.[4] In addition, this record may shed some light on the will: "Mary Dyer Sister of Thomas Dyer; m. Philip Reed; of Weymouth, MA."[5]

Family

Agnes married Thomas Dyer. in Weymouth [6]. They had eight children, five sons and three daughters, according to Catherine Dyer.[1] According to researcher, Frank Dyer, they had nine children.[3] All nine are reported here:

  1. Mary Dyer b: 6 JUL 1641 in Weymouth
  2. John [Twin] Dyer b: 10 JUL 1643 in Weymouth
  3. Thomas [Twin] Dyer b: 10 JUL 1643 in Weymouth
  4. Thomas Dyer b: 29 MAR 1645 in Weymouth
  5. Abigail Dyer b: 9 JUL 1647 in Weymouth
  6. Sarah Dyer b: 10 MAR 1649 in Weymouth; mar, as his 2nd, to John Ruggles[7]
  7. Thomas Dyer b: 5 MAR 1651 in Weymouth
  8. Benjamin [Twin] Dyer b: 6 NOV 1653 in Weymouth
  9. Joseph [Twin] Dyer b: 6 NOV 1653 in Weymouth

Death and Legacy

There is quite a bit of disagreement about the death date of Agnes. According to Catherine Dyer, Agnes died in 1666 at Weymouth, Suffolk (later Norfolk) County, Massachusetts.[1] Researcher Frank Dyer reports a death date of 10 December 1668.[3], and Harrison Dyer reports December 4, 1667.[2]

Removed the connections to the profiles for William Reed and Avis Chapman as parents, but left mention of them in the biography under "Uncertain Origin." Seems the supposed relationship is purely circumstantial, based on the will of Philip Reed calling Thomas Dyer, "brother." However, that particular Reed family was not in Weymouth until about 1650 (they have been confused with the other, earlier Reads, William who married Hayme and Crooke).
