James was born in 1840 to Robert Redfern and Ellen McClarnen. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1851. He was living with his brother Benjamin's family in 1860. James enlisted in Company F of the 103rd OVI on 6 Aug 1862 as a Private. He was promoted to Corporal on 9 Feb 1863. He mustered out with the company on 12 Jun 1865. After the war, he married Mary D. Bryant on 24 Jan 1866. They lived in Russia, Lorain, Ohio by 1870 and he was a Farmer by trade. In 1880, he was living in Amherst, Lorain, Ohio and continued farming. By 1890 he had moved to Elyria and he was afflicted with rheumatism. While living in Elyria he worked as a Janitor in a school building. He passed away in 1914.
