Biography

John Read was born sometime before 1637 (based on age 21 at Freemanship in 1658).

Tradition says that John Read's origin is Plymouth, England although no supporting sources have been located. He settled in Newport, Rhode Island where he likely plied his trade as a cordwainer.[1] John's death location and date have not been located.

1658 May 11: John was received as a freeman at Portsmouth.[2]

1665 Feb 18: A Coroners Jury was held to investigate the death of nine-year old Mary Samon. Her "father-in-law" John Read had sent her to fetch water and she never returned. The cause of death was ruled accidental drowning. [3]

1667 Feb 28: Six acres of land was layed out for him "in right of Captaine randall houlden of Warwicke." [4] 1667 Apr 20: At a Town meeting, John was selected as a juryman for Warwick. [5]

1667 May 12: The General Court of Trials excused a fine because "his wife is big with child and neere the time of his delivery." [6]

1669 Oct 22: At meeting of the Court, John and the other Newport constable issued a complaint against Job Hakens for refusing to help them enforce a warrant against "a Runaway." [7]

1677 Jun 20: "John Reade of Newport cordwainer" purchased land from Matthew Boomer on the east side of "Tanton River."[8]

Research Notes

Disambiguation: John Reade, cordwainer of Newport, RI has been previously confused with John Reade of Rehoboth, farmer and tavern keeper and husband of Sarah Lessie. Please take care to distinguish these two. John Reade of Newport (this profile), first appears in Newport, RI, and is only known to have resided there.
