Biography

Thomas Read was born 9 August 1727 in Leicester, Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay, to Joseph Read and Sarah Rice, both originally of Sudbury, Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay. The family removed to Oxford, Worcester, Province of Massachusetts Bay about 1729. His father passed away in December 1731 and he was raised by his stepfather Ebenezer Humphrey.

Thomas married Experience (Shumway) Reed on 2 August 1749 in Oxford.^[1] They had one child, Joseph Reed (m. Hannah Learned 1775 Oxford), born 19 April 1750 in Oxford.^[2]

Thomas passed away about December 1750 in Oxford.

Probate

The will of Thomas Read of Oxford, husbandman was dated 13 December 1750 and proved on 29 December 1750 in Worcester. He mentioned his wife Experience, his only child Joseph Read, and his father-in-law Jeremiah Shumway.^[3]

His inventory was taken on 2 January 1750/51 in Oxford.^[4]

NOTE: The reference History of the Reed family in Europe and America by Reed, Jacob Whittemore, 1805-1869. 'from old catalog', page 78-^[6] has inaccurate information on this family line, including listing the wrong father (and grandparents, etc.) for Thomas and his siblings. His father was Joseph Read of Sudbury, son of Thomas Read (III) and Mary Goodrich, of the Sudbury READS. Please see the Space page History of the Reed Family in Europe and America for a warning on using this source with "extreme caution" due to "impossible assertions" etc. It has caused much conflation of these two different Read/Reed families, due to this information being repeated in a few other older books. There was a Joseph Reed Jr. of Woburn, son of Lt. Joseph Reed and Phebe Walker, married to a Sarah Reed but it was a different couple with their own set of Vital Records (birth, marriage, child, death, will, etc.) all from Woburn.
