Enlisted in to Company H of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 1862-August-9 at age 18 as Private. He was captured near Murphreesborough on 1863-Janhart-21 and was later paroled. He was mustered out at the end of the war.

Captured of the 105th Regiment.
The following list of the captured of the 105th Regiment, O. V. I., is taken from the Adjutant's roll. All of them are now held as prisoners by the secesh. They were captured six and a half miles northeast of Murfreesboro, January 21st, 1963. Captain Byron W. Canfield was acting commandant of these detached companies of the forage train. The secesh cavalry captured them by strategy. About one-third of the secesh force were dressed in Union uniforms. They captured, in addition to the men, 25 lumber wagons and 175 mules that were hitched to them. The troops were located in the northeast part of the notorious cedar thickets, so extensively noticed by correspondents. ...
