OTTO AND EMMA RICHTER
In 1903, when he was six years old, Otto Richter came from Steams County, MN to Otter Tail County with his parents the Rev. Otto (1870 - 1944) and Sophie Kruse Richter (1871 - 1962). His father was called to be pastor of St. Paul' s Lutheran Church at Loon Lake near the present town of Vergas. Otto attended the church school, but spent most of his boyhood working the family farm next to the church.
Emma Ratz was born in Hobart Twp. in 1903 to Adam Ratz (1872 - 1924) and Augustina Bunkowske Ratz (1877-1961). She attended school in Dist. 75, the Rose Lake School. Otto and Emma were married in 1923 in St. John's Lutheran Church in Vergas. They farmed near Vergas for several years and then in 1934 they bought a farm inSection 33 of Hobart Township, which was to be their home of the rest of their lives. The first years there were depression days and money was scarce, but they made do with what they had, canning vegetables, berries, and meat and sewing "made over" clothes. In 1948 they rented out the farmland and Otto did carpenter work and worked in the turkey plant, but continued to raise beef cattle and laying hens.
Otto and Emma had three children: Vernon who is married to Ruth Favorite Lozer and lives at Delta, OH; Marian is married to Rodney Flatau; and Hazel who married Levi Johnson. The Flataus and the Johnsons both live in Hobart Township.
Otto died in 1981 and Emma died in 1986. They are buried in Lakeside Cemetery at Frazee.
