Biography

Hyacinthe Ratel was born at Saint-Jacques, Bas-Canada (Quebec) was born on Dec. 5, 1823 and he was baptized there the same day with his twin brother, Narcisse. [1] Hyacinthe was a son of Charles Ratel and Marie Euphrosine Arsenault who had married at Saint-Jacques-de-l'Achigan on Jan. 10, 1815. [2]

Hyacinthe and his family moved to Vermont about 1845 or perhaps a bit earlier and he married Marie Aurelie Labossière on Nov. 18, 1845 at St. Mary's Cathedral, Montpelier, Vermont. [3] [4] She was the fourth known child of five and the second daughter three for Alexis Francois Labossière and Marie Françoise Archambault. A year later, one of his brothers, Edouard would marry a younger sister of Aurelie, Marie Angele. [RESEARCH NOTE: The first image confirms the marriage location. Second image is the couple and date.]

Over the next 24 years, Jesse Ratel and Aurelie Labossiere had 13 known children, six boy and seven girls, including possibly two sets of twins. It is believed that at least three children died as infants. Most of the birth records have not been found, but all of the 13 children are listed in at least one census record.
