Biography

Johanna Rankin was born 7/10 December 1902 in Jerauld, South Dakota, the daughter of Darwin Rankin and Johanna Hasker. ^[1]

Johanna was born 19 Dec. 1902 (dates vary), the daughter of Darwin Alexander Rankin and Johanna Margaretha Hasker, the second of their ten children. She married Limbert George Sibson. They had nine children the first was born in 1926. ^[2]

In 1910, the Rankin family lived in Union, Sanborn, South Dakota. They owned their property, a farm, with a mortgage. The household included Darwin R. Rankin, 38, born in Illinois (father b. IN; mother b. IL), a farmer; his wife of nine years, Johanna, 31, b. SD (parents b. Germany), who had had six children; their six children, Clara M., 8; Johanna, 7; Florence E., 6; Chester H., 5; Sylvester A., 3; and Peter J., 1. The four eldest were in school. Living nearby was another Rankin family: Joseph O. Rankin*, 36, b. IL (f. b. IN; m. b. Rankin, 48, a farmer; his wife, Johanna M., 40; and their ten children, the eight eldest were in school: Clara M., 18; Johanna, 17; Florence E., 15; Chester, 14; Sylvester, 12; Peter J., 10; Lawrence, 8; Bertha, 7;;Francis J., 5; and Dallas D., 3. ^[4]

In 1930, the Sibson family lived in their rented home in Ravenna, Sanborn, South Dakota. They had a radio. All members of the household were born in South Dakota. The family included Lambert Sibson, 25, a farmer, not a veteran, who had married at age 19; his wife, Johanna E., 27 (father b. Illinois; mother b. SD), who married at 21; their children, Elsie E., 4; and Leo F., 1; and Johanna’s brother, Chester H. Rankin, 24, b. SD, a farmer, and not a veteran. ^[5]

In 1940, the Sibson family lived in Union Township, Sanborn, South Dakota. Their rent was $8 per month. They had moved from rural Sanborn County within the previous five years. The family included Lambert Sibson, 33, a farmer, who had completed the eighth grade; his wife, Johanna Elizabeth, 36, who had completed eighth grade; their five children, Elsie Elizabeth, 14; Leo Francis, 11; Nora Jean, 9; Margaret Johanna, 5; and Herbert Joseph, 3. Living nearby were Johanna’s parents and three brothers. ^[6]
