Biography

John was born about 1799. He passed away in 1880.

John Green Randolph (occupation: shoemaker) enlisted in the 24th Infantry of the US Army at age 14 on October 24, 1813. His height was reported to be 5 feet 2 inches, and he later stated that he was too small to carry a musket at first. He served 1st at Ft. Russell, Illinois with his Father, John Randolph, and with an older brother, Peyton W. Randolph. Later, John served at Fort Scott and at Fort Gadsden during the first Seminole War. John was discharged from military service at Ft. Gadsden, Florida on October 24, 1818. (Although he enlisted in the 24th Infantry Regiment with his father in 1813, John received a land warrant for 160 acres in 1818 indicating that he had served in the 7th Infantry Regiment).

He returned to District 22, Wilson Co., TN where he soon began accumulating land. John married Nancy Gayle Wynne near Jackson, TN. In 1838, John and his growing family were early settlers in McNairy County, TN. John soon became a successful farmer and a large landowner. He reported owning 20 slaves on the 1860 census.

Nancy and John had ten children: Sarah T, Elizabeth N., John W., Samuel H, Martha E., Mary L., George W., James K. P., Levenia Ann, and Almeda.

The brick box tomb was repaired in 1930 & 1940, by Eugene Schaeffer, and again in 2023 by John B Randolph. In 2023, a plaque from the Veterans Administration was added commemorating his service during and after the War of 1812.
