James Newman Randle was born on 11 Mar 1859[1][2][3] or March 1858[4] in New York State.[1][3][4][5][6] His birth date is recorded on his death certificate, grave stone, and listed in his son Edward's military file. The date and place are largely consistent with his marriage and census records.
According to his death certificate, for which his widow Louise was the informant, his parents were Mary Van Dike (born in Holland) and Loyal Randle (birthplace unknown).[1][4][6] (See DNA Evidence below for possible candidates for his parentage.)
His whereabouts and movements for the first 27 years of his life is unknown.
On 13 Feb 1886, there were letters for him at the post office in Winnemucca, Nevada.[7] And in Oct 1886, his name was published among a list of Registered Voters for Precinct No. 16, Paradise, Humboldt County, Nevada.[8]
He received a license to marry German immigrant Louise Kirchner on 24 Nov 1886 in Humboldt County, Nevada.[5][4][9][10] At the time, he was 27 years old, she was 19, and they were both residents of Paradise, Nevada.[5] They were married the same day by Rev. T. E. Sisson at the Methodist Episcopal Parsonage in Winnemucca.[11]
The couple had the following children:
In 14 Feb 1893, a James M. Randle purchased 160 acres alongside Grenada Butte in Southern Oregon, just north of the border with California.[12]
In 1900, the family was renting a home in Fairmount -- annexed just 5 years later as a neighborhood of Eugene -- Oregon.[4] James was working as a day laborer.[4]
On 9 Sep 1904, a James N. Randle acquired 160 acres of land along Fawn Creek just west of Lorane in Lane County, Oregon.[13]
By 1910, they had bought and mortgaged a house at 806 Villard St, near the south bank of the Willamette River, not far from the University of Oregon.[6] James was self-employed as a "timber cruiser".[6]
In 1914, while he was living on E 13th St in Eugene, he was the registered owner of a Black B5440, with registration #15966.[14]
He passed away at 2:30 AM on 21 May 1916 at his home at 1432 Orchard St in Eugene, Oregon.[1][15] (This is the date given on his Oregon death certificate, in the Oregon Death Index, and his obituary. This differs from the date inscribed on his grave marker, 16 May 1916, which is presumed to be in error.)[2]
Obituary of James Randle, Timber Cruiser[15] |
There is growing DNA evidence for James Newman Randle's parentage.
At least 22 known descendants of JNR have had their DNA tested at Ancestry.com, and at least 10 have tested on 23andMe. Among them are at least 7 great-grandchildren of JNR.
JNR's descendants share DNA connections to the descendants of the couple John Van Dyke (b. abt 1775 in New York; d. 19 Dec 1863 in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan) & Rebecca Morse, specifically through their children: Mary (Van Dyke) Buvee, Owen Van Dyke, Jane Eliza (Van Dyke) Bulman, Nelson Van Dyke, and Clarissa (Van Dyke) Herrick.
DNA connections can also be found between JNR's descendants and the descendants of the couple William Smith (d. 1844 in Busti, Chautauqua Co., NY) & Polly Slayton, notably through their children Lyman Clark Smith and Louisa (Smith) Van Dyke.
As Owen Van Dyke and Louisa Smith were married, JNR is likely to be a descendent of one of their (at least) 8 children.
One of Owen and Louisa's daughters, Mary Van Dyke (b. Feb 1836), was the widow of Loyal Bradish (b. abt 1822 in Potsdam, NY), a private in the New York Infantry who died in May 1863 in a skirmish during the U.S. Civil War.
These two names happen to be remarkably similar to the names of JNR's parents on his death certificate, as informed by his widow: Mary Van Dike (b. Holland) and Loyal Randle.[1]
JNR gave his birthdate variously as 11 Mar 1858 or 1859. If JNR was the product of Mary Van Dyke's marriage to Loyal Bradish, he would have been born after 1861. If either of his birth years are accurate, he was likely the product of an extra-marital relationship.
1. Are there any other contemporaneous Randles in Paradise, Nevada? Charles Edwin Randle, b. abt 1876 in California, lived in Paradise and married in 1899.[16]
2. Is there evidence of him in the 1880 US Census?
3. Is there evidence of him in the 1870 US Census?
4. Is there evidence of him in the 1860 US Census?
5. Can he be found on the voting registers in Humboldt County?
