Frederick "Fred" Rail was born in 1889 in Philleigh, Cornwall, England to William Stafford Rail and Margaret Jane (Old/Ould) Rail. His birth was registered in Truro, Cornwall in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Old.[1]
Frederick Rail, son of William Stafford Rail, a labourer, & Margaret Jane, residing at Trenistral Ruan Lanithorne, was christened on 13 Jul 1890 at St Filius in Philleigh.[2] His brother William was christened on the same day.
In 1891 Fred Rail (age 2) lived in Ruan Lanihorne, Cornwall with his father William (31, Agricultural Labourer), mother Margaret (29), and two brothers: Henry (3) and Kelley[William] (0).[3]
In 1901 Frederick Rail (age 13, Cow Boy) lived in Budock, Cornwall with his employer William J Mitchell (71, Farmer) - also in the household were William's three children: William Mitchell (29, Farmer's Son), Elizabeth J Mitchell (34), and Susan Mitchell (32), as well as servant Arthur Young (16, Carter On Farm).[4] Frederick's family lived at Trebat Martha in Constantine, Cornwall: father William (40, Horse Man On Farm), mother Margaret (39), and four siblings: William Jr (10), Mabel (8), Walter (6), and Rd Henry (2).[5]
In 1911 Frederick Rail (age 25, Groom) lived in Probus, Cornwall with his wife Florence Maud (24) and daughter Florence May (9[1]).[6]
In 1921 Frederick Rail (age 32) lived in Loddiswell, Devon with his wife Florence Maud (33) and three daughters: Florence May (71[11]), Phyllis (10), and Gwendoline (7).[7]
