Biography

'New York state flag'
Mary (Raia) Hagin was a New Yorker.

Marie was born in 1896. She passed away in 1990. Mary was the youngest of the family and the only one born in the United States. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York. The family Americanized their names so she used Mary rather than Marie. Mary and her sister, Paulina went on a blind date where they both met their future husbands. Mary met and married Jesse Hagin. Paulina met and married Paul Hagin, Jesse’s brother. The Hagin brothers were born and raised in Tampa, Florida. Mary and Jesse had two children. His work on an oil tanker as an engineer caused him to be away from home most of the year. Around 1949 Mary lived in a house they bought in East Meadow, New York. She lived alone, however her bubbly personality attracted many friends. Jesse retired from his work for Mobil Oil in 1961. He died in 1967, and she continued to live there until the 1970s when she moved in with her daughter, Lucille and her family. Mary was a real “fire-cracker”. She always celebrated her birthday on July 4th. It wasn’t until after she passed away that the family found out that her birthday was actually July 3rd. She passed away from pneumonia at age 95.
