Biography

European Aristocracy
Queen Ingiriðr Ragnvaldsdatter was a member of the aristocracy in Europe.

Ingerid Ragnvaldsdotter (Norse: Ingiriðr Rǫgnvaldsdóttir) was the daughter of Swedish king Ragnvald Ingesson "Knaphövde", and was probably born about 1108.

She was married four times.

Her first husband was Henrik Svendsen Skadelår, who died 4 Jun 1134; she was probably wedded to him around age 12. They had four sons, including:

  • King Magnus II of Sweden (Magnus Henriksson) - arranged the murder of Saint Eric IX of Sweden and possibly also Sverker I of Sweden; was himself murdered and was regarded a usurper afterwards
  • Jarl Ragnvald Henriksson (Ragvald Henriksson) - Riksjarl of Sweden during his brother's brief reign
  • Burits Henriksson (also Buris/Boris; likely 1130–1167, murdered) - Earl of Jutland, married in 1166 to a daughter (b. 1150) of Luitgard of Stade and Hermann II, Count of Winzenburg

Her second husband was Norwegian king Harald Gille, whom she married a few months after the death of Henrik Skadelår; she was the queen of Norway until Harald's death in 1136. They had one son:

  • King Inge Haraldsson of Norway (Ingi Haraldsson) - known as Inge Krokrygg, Harald's only legitimate son. The sagas tell of Ingerid advocating to have Inge and his brother Sigurd hailed as kings in 1136, and of her spurring Inge on to become the only king (instead of sharing with his brothers) when he came of age.

After Harald's death, she had a son born out of wedlock with Ivar Sneis:

  • Orm Ivarsson (Ormr konungsbróðir) (illegitimate) - prominent leader during the reign of king Magnus Erlingsson, next to the king in power after the death of Erling Skakke.

Her third husband was Ottar Birting, who died about 1146.

Her fourth husband was Arne Ivarsson of Stårheim. They had three sons and one daughter:

  • Philip of Herdla (Philippus í Herðlu)
  • Bishop Nicholas Arnesson (Nikolás Árnason) - co-founder of the Bagler party
  • Inge Arnesson (Ingi Árnason)
  • Margrete Arnesdotter (Margrét Árnadóttir) - mother of the Bagler king Filip Simonsson

Ingerid is last mentioned in Heimskringla when she and her husband go to exile in Denmark after the death of king Inge.
