Jan was a 17th-century settler in Albany, New York. His last name is variously recorded as Radcliff, Radcliffe, Ratcliff, Rateliffe, Redly, Rateliff, Ratelief, Redliff, Ratle, and other variants. Based on his name, he is likely to have been English.
He was married to Albany native Rachel Lambertse Van Valkenburg. The earliest record of him identified in Pearson's First Settlers of Albany is from 1686, when a child of Jan Redly was baptized in Albany.[1]
He was appointed city porter in Albany in place of Hendrick Marselis in 1697, and klockluyer (bell ringer) in place of Hendrick Roseboom in 1703.[1]
He died before 1727, when his wife Rachel was recorded as a widow.[1]

Radcliffe is the name given to Jan/John in numerous sources, including the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record article. It is likely that he was from England, just based on the fact that the Dutch struggled greatly with his surname. Quackenbush-118 06:49, 18 January 2017 (EST)
