Isaac Ferdinand Quinby was an American educator and soldier. Quinby was a Brigadier General in the Union army during the Civil War.

Isaac Ferdinand Quinby came from an old New England family. He was born on January 29, 1821, on a farm near Morristown, Morris Township, Morris, New Jersey, United States. [1]

Quinby attended the United States Military Academy. He was 6th in the Class of 1843. His friend, U. S. Grant was 21st in that class. Quinby had service at various garrisons. He also taught Natural Philosophy (Physics) at the Academy. [1]

Quinby helped raise the 13th Regiment. He was appointed Colonel in command of the 13th. Colonel Quinby led his regiment at the First battle of Manassas. He resigned his commission a month later. On 20, 1862, Quinby accepted a commission of Brigadier General in the District of Mississippi. General Quinby was reassigned to 7th Division, Army of Tennessee. His Division unsuccessfuly attempted to reach Vicksburg via the Yazoo Pass. Despite illness, General Quinby saw combat at the Battle of Champion Hill, the Battle of Big Black River and the early assaults on Vicksburg. [1]

On December 31, 1863, Quinby resigned and returned to his academic life. [1][2]

In 1865, Quinby served as the Provost Marshall of the 28th New York Congressional District. From 1869 to 1877, Quinby served as United States Marshall for the Northern District of New York. From 1885 to 1890, Quinby was Surveyor for the City of Rochester. [1]

Postbellum

After his military service, Quinby returned to being a professor at Rochester University. He taught there from 1863 to 1884. [2]

He died on September 18, 1891, in Rochester, Monroe, New York, United States. [5]
