George served with the 49th Regament, North Carolina Infantry in the Civil War.

The 49th was organizes in March 1862, and served in the Army of Northern Virginia. It faught from the Seven Day's Battles to Fredricksburg, the New Bern area near Chowan River in N.C. Then returning to Virginia faught at Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbour, Malvern Hill,Sayler's Creek and Appomaddox. It surrendered of Apr 9, 1865.
