Mlada was the younger daughter of Boleslav I of Bohemia and possibly Biagota. Neither her birth date nor her death date are known. Her birth is generally estimated to be in the 930's since she was old enough in 965 to be sent to Rome by her father to negotiate with Pope John XIII the establishment of a bishopric in Prague.
During her stay in Rome she became a Benedictine nun and took on the name Maria. She received the papal permission to found a monastery in Prague and so became the abbess of the St. George Convent in Prague Castle, the first religious order in Bohemia, after her return from Rome.
She died some time after 983. The date of February 9, 994 which is often quoted in the literature derives from the Jesuit Georgio Crugerio from the year 1669 and is based on the traditions of the monastery without any contemporaneous record.
