William Putt was born in Torquay, Devonshire, England, October 22, 1831. With his wife, he came to America in 1851, settling in Morris, Illinois. In 1856, on account of the malaria then prevalent in Illinois, the family moved to Northport, Michigan, returning eleven years later to make their home in Lisbon, Illinois. After the death of his wife in 1882, he came with his family to Fairmont, Nebraska.

In 1895 Mr. Putt was married to Mrs. Abeliza Hogoboom, who died in June, 1913, after more than two years of suffering and helplessness. He was baptized in childhood in the Episcopal church, but more than fifty years ago, he united with the Methodist Episcopal church and has lived a consistent Christian life. He believed in practical Christianity, and no good cause ever appealed to him in vain. He was always ready to help, to work and to give.

In his early boyhood, he became identified with the first temperance society established in England and his heart was in the cause as long as he lived. All his life he was a close observer and a constant reader, and his active mind was always on the alert for more knowledge.

For several years his health has been failing but he remained active and was never so happy as when at work. When urged to take more rest he replied that he would "rather wear out than rust out." His wish was granted for he was busy at work when he was stricken on Friday morning. He rallied, but not for long, and passed away at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 1914, aged eighty-two years, eleven months and three days.

Mr. Putt leaves three sons and three daughters: Mrs. Minnie Rushton of Omaha, Nebraska; Charles F. of Afton, Iowa; Will O. of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Lida E. Wright of Fairmont; Frank H. of Friend, Nebraska and Isabel of Fairmont. There are also twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The memory of his clean life, his upright character and his Christian ideals will always be a precious heritage to those who are left behind.

The funeral services were held from the M.E. church Sunday, September 2, being conducted by the pastor, Rev. Connely, assisted by Rev. Evans of the Congregational church, Rev. Wigton of the Presbyterian church and Rev. Albright of the M.E. church. Interment was made in the Fairmont cemetery. The large attendance and many floral tributes from the home and distant friends gave evidence of the esteem of the life and character of the aged father and friend now gone to his rest.

Those from out of town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Ruston, Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Putt, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Bertwell, Raymond W. Rushton, Miss Alice Rushton, Lyell Rushton, Leslie Putt, Mr. and Mrs. F.G. Usher, all of Omaha, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Putt of Afton, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Putt of Friend, Nebraska; Howard Rushton of Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Susie Hawley and Miss Bessie Hawley of York, Nebraska; Dr. W.T. Putt of Grand Island, Nebraska; Charles S. Putt of Mankato, Kansas; Rev. and Mrs. Ruch of Sutton , Nebraska.
