James was born in 1852 in Holton, Oxfordshire, son of James Purdy and Harriet Munt. ^[1] He was baptised on 12 September 1852 in Holton, Oxfordshire, England.^[2]

In the 1861 census James (age 8) was living with his father, grandmother and siblings in Holton, Oxfordshire, England. His father was a widower and agricultural labourer. ^[3]

James wed Isabella In Chesterfield in 1878 ^[4]

In the 1891 census James (age 38) was living with his wife and daughter Ada in Pilsley, Derbyshire, England. His birthplace has been incorrectly recorded as 'Hobton' rather than Holton. ^[5]

He died in 1896 ^[6] N.B. this profile previously quoted a death in 1931 but this must be incorrect as his wife is a widow on the 1911 census.
