Project: Language

Overview

The purpose of this project is to explore ways to make WikiTree more friendly to non-English speakers, as well as provide assistance to people needing translation of non-English resources.

Discussion

Discussion of language-related issues should take place in the G2G forum using language as the tag.

Discussion of possible ways to help people or ways to improve this project are welcome. WikiTree works on the efforts of its' volunteers so please try to get involved.

Language Volunteers

First and foremost, see Language volunteers. This page lists WikiTreers who have kindly offered to assist other WikiTreers with language issues. If you have a language skill that you would like to share, please contact Paul Bech.

While your participation is entirely voluntary it is necessary to make some contribution at some point. A badge is placed on the profile page of all volunteers as a sign that they are active and prepared to assist. All volunteers will be contacted from time to time by the Project Leader to determine if they are still active. Badges may be removed from members who become inactive (mainly if they do not answer group emails), but they can readily be restored if that member wishes to resume active involvement.

Volunteers should always follow the WikiTree Honor Code.

Language Glossaries

It would also be useful if volunteers could contribute to the Glossary of common genealogical terms in their chosen language. The current list of Glossaries can be found found. There are still many languages not represented, and improvements can always be made to existing Glossaries.

Language Portals

Some languages also have WikiTree language portals. Examples include:

The Dutch Portal and the Nederlands Portaal Project
Were created by Dutch WikiTree users and now this is a sub-project of the Netherlands Project to assist other WikiTree users.

The Suid Afrikaanse Portaal Project was created by South African WikiTree users to assist other WikiTree users.

The Portail Francophone Project was created by French or French speaking WikiTree users to assist other WikiTree users.

If you would like to see such a portal in your language, please contact the Project Leader for more information and assistance.
