This is a study to research the history and meaning of the Harvey surname. Harvey Surname History

The Harvey surname, one of the most ancient surnames, originated with the ancient Gallic personal name "Aeruiu"or "Haerviu", and roughly translates to "battle worthy". The Gauls were an ancient Celtic people who lived in what is now France, and was brought to the British Isles by Breton followers of William the Conqueror in it's Gallicized form Hervé. P. H. Reaney, author of the authoritative book A Dictionary of English Surnames, believes the surname may also be from a Norman personal name, or of the Old German name Herewig, from the Germanic words hari, heri meaning ‘army’ + wig, meaning 'war’.
