Balthasar Johannes 1794-1863 & Maria Sibella ERASMUS 1798-1863 PRINS? Balthasar Johannes 1794-1863.• The name PRINS appears prominently on one of the fragments. The inscription shows that he was born in July 1794, baptised on 22.3.1798, and died on 11.5.1863. • According to word of mouth (for many generations), both PRINS and his wife were murdered by a Chinese citizen in 1863. I am rather sceptical about this allegation as I cannot find any record of the PRINS murders, or of Chinese having lived in the Boekenhoutskloof area as early as 1863 – assuming they were in fact murdered there. • The couple may have been murdered elsewhere and then brought to Boekenhoutskloof to be buried in the family cemetery. His wife Maria Sibella PRINS was an Erasmus by birth. • Prins himself died on 5.5.1863 and was buried on the 11.5.1863 in grave 6 of the Erasmus cemetery. His wife Sibella was probably mortally wounded during the alleged attack, and she died five days later on 16.5.1863. She is buried beside her husband in grave No. 7.
