Henry served as a private in Company H of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was 24 years old, married and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 14 August 1863 in Charlotte, Vermont. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[2]
His brother Isaac also served in Company H, and his first cousins Elmer H. & Francis H. Jackson, and Eugene, Nelson & Silas Crosier Jr. also served in the 54th. His first cousin Mariah Emery married R. Mark Roberts who also served in the 54th.
In 1884, he married his second wife, Hester Hasbrook.[1]
He died in 1902 and is buried in Hinesburg Village Cemetery in Hinesburg, Vermont.[3]
