Biography

Newdigate Poyntz of the "Benefield Branch"[1] of the Poyntz family, was the eldest son[2] , [3] of the five children that Captain Newdigate Poyntz had by his third wife Mary Perkins

Newdigate Poyntz was born in 1638 and would have been about age 5 when his father Captain Newdigate Poyntz was killed at Gainsborough. After the death of his mother Mary, he obtained letters of administration on 6 December 1662 to his father's effects left to his mother to hold in trust for him and his siblings pursuant to his father's will dated 26 March 1639.[4]

He settled at Plymouth, Devon, and is named in a petition in Chancery dated 8 February 1676 as a merchant and Borough Constable.[4]

He married Mary Stanning, the relict of merchant John Stanning of Plymouth, on 11 April 1674 at Charles Church, Plymouth, Devon.[4]

Mary and Newdigate had one daughter Mary. Daughter Mary, then under the legal age of 21, was named in a Chancery suit claiming charges due and brought 28 July 1693 by her cousin John Poyntz concerning certain properties left by her Grandfather Newdigate which had passed to her father Newdigate II and her as her father's sole heir.[4]

The date and place of death of Newdigate are not known. Additional vital statistics for his wife Mary and his daughter Mary and their respective fates are also not yet known.
