Stephen Poyntz was the son of William Poyntz, upholsterer of Cornhill and his second wife, Jane Monteage. Born in 1685 he was baptised at St Michael, Cornhill in November. [1] He was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1706.[2] After his formal education he travelled abroad with the Duke of Devonshire and became tutor to the sons of Lord Townshend at The Hague. He served James Earl Stanhope as commissary and in 1724 was sent on a diplomatic mission to Sweden followed by a mission to the congress at Soissons in 1728, remaining abroad until 1730.[2]
Having returned to England he was appointed governor to the King's second son, the William Augustus Duke of Cumberland in 1731. [2]
Stephen married Anne Maria Mordaunt, daughter of Brig.-Gen. Hon. Lewis Mordaunt and his second wife, Mary Collyer, in February 1733, [3][4] Living in rooms at St James's Palace they had four children, Louisa, WIlliam, Charles and Margaret.[4]
Stephen was invested as a Privy Counsellor in 1735. [4][2]
Stephen died at Midgham in Berkshire on 17 December 1750 [5] and was buried there.[2]
