Biography
Helen Melissa Powers was born on May 27, 1923, in Lancaster County, Nebraska, to Frank C. Powers.[1]
Helen married Walter D. Rhoades on July 20, 1942, in Papillion, Nebraska.[2][3][4]
At the 1950 census, Helen and Walter were living in Colfax Township, Atchison County, Missouri, with their children Diana, Sharon, Walter, and Ralph.[5]
Helen and Walter were granted a divorce on August 22, 1960.[6] The custody of one child each was granted to Helen, Walter, and Walter's sister.[7]
Helen married Walter's brother George Rhoades at an unknown point during the 1960s. She died on October 9, 1969, and was buried in Auburn, Nebraska. She had been residing in Peru, Nebraska, at the time of her death.[8]
Research Notes
It may sound highly questionable that Helen married her ex-husband's brother, but this is strongly supported by evidence. Helen's obituary names her husband George [Rhoades], the four children living with her and Walter at the 1950 census, and an additional daughter.[8] George's obituary in November 2000 names the same daughter.[9] The Social Security Applications and Claims Index confirms that the George Rhoades who died on November 26, 2000, was the son of Walter's parents Arthur Rhoades and Ora Taylor.[10]
