Note N1873The 1860 Census for Somers Township in Preble County, Ohio (Camden Post Office), enumerated on the 18th day of July, lists Reuben Pottenger, age 42 [b abt 1818], a farmer born in Ohio; Susan, age 39 [b abt 1821, born in Kentucky; Jas Pottenger, age 17 [b abt 1843], born in Ohio; Nancy, age 11 [b abt 1849], born in Ohio; Findley, age 9 [b abt 1851], born in Ohio; Durham, age 7 [b abt 1853], born in Ohio; David, age 5 [b abt 1855], born in Ohio; Walker, age 2 [b abt 1858], born in Ohio. Also in the household is Mary Campbell, age 18 [b abt 1842], born in Ohio. The census from this period does not show relationships. Also on this same page, from the household listed above that of Reuben Pottenger, is the name Mary Pottenger, age 15, born in Ohio. A review of the previous page of the census shows she was living in the household of John Pottenger, age 56 [b abt 1804], a 'farm laborer', born in Kentucky, with Nancy, age 56, born in Pennsylvania; Nancy, age 23 [1837], born in Indiana; Annie, age 21 [b abt 1839], born in Indiana; Malissa, age 19 [b abt 1841], born in Indiana. With a birth date of approx. 1804, this John Pottenger was probably his brother.

It shows Reuben Pottenger, age 62, a farmer, born in Ohio, father born in Virginia, mother in Kentucky. With him is his wife, Susan, age 59, keeping house, born in Kentucky, both parents born in Virginia; a son Walker, age 22, born in Ohio, a laborer, his father born in Ohio, his mother in Kentucky; Sarah, a daughter, age 19, born in Ohio, employed as a school teacher; Ellen G. Pottenger, age 27 [b abt 1853], employed as a seamstress, born in Ohio, her father born in New Jersey, her mother in Ohio. On the previous page of this 1880 Census there is a listing for (household 117) Daniel R Pottenger, age 28 [b abt 1852], a laborer born in Ohio, and his wife Frances M. Pottenger, age 23 [b abt 1857], employed at sewing, born in Ohio, her father born in Tennessee and her mother in Virginia. Presently, I have no reference to a Daniel Pottenger of that birth year in the family tree.

OBITUARY

POTTENGER - Reuben Pottenger was born on the 16 day of August, 1818, and was called to his long home December 23, 1896. He was aged 78 years, 4 months and 7 days.

During the month of February, 1842, he married Susannah Finley. A family of eight was their lot, three girls and five boys. There are still living one daughter and three sons; the wife and mother having preceded the deceased some five years ago.

Few residents of this community but do not know the deceased. Born and reared, lived and died in the land and community of his nativity.

For many years Uncle Reuben Pottenger was the foremost business man of the town of Camden, and at one time few merchants were there in the county who had a more thriving business or greater mercantile interests.

Successful, he aided others to success; and when by his generosity and friendship and acts of accomodation, he was overtaken by a gret storm of adversity he strengthened his friendship and fidelity, bearing his cross with fortitude.

His was a life of usefullness and thrift,. Many are they who for gratitude and the helping hand, today, know and feel the deep loss of one, whom Providence had smiled upon.

"God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform," and though we may not pervieve the many blessings which are bestowed upon us, yet we know that "God is Love," and there can be nothing greater than love.

There is much in humanity that we fail to observe, but he who is the recipient of one's generosity and advice, observes with keener perception of th loss of him whom he can only love.

The spectacle of mortality brings to each the sense of the imortality; and today, the remains of the loved one remind us all of that Immortality which has left its escapement to become one of the chosen.

In the death of the honored citizen, we have a loss which can not be fully realized; having reached a ripe age he was plucked from the great tree of life, and hence taken from all of life's miseries and woes to enjoy that reward attending a life well begun; a life's battle well won; a life's glory now done.

To weary hearts, to mourning homes,

God's meekest Angel gently comes;

Oh, thou who mournest on thy way,

With longings for the close of day:

He walks with thee, that Angel kind;

And gently whispers "Be resigned,

Bear up, bear on, thy end shall tell,

The dear Lord ordereth all things well."
