Richard Clifford Porter was born 20 Jun 1878 in Ames, Iowa[1][2], son of Philander Lovelace Porter (1825-1903) and Susan Dukes (1844-1934). He migrated with his parents and two sisters to Eureka, California around 1902, and his father died there the following year[3]. In Eureka, Richard was appointed manager of a foundry that had been purchased by the California Iron Works.
On 18 Apr 1909 in Eureka[4], he married Jennie Blanche Rotermund (1881-1933), a nurse from Eureka who was working at Children's Hospital in San Francisco. They settled in Eureka and had three children.

Among his notable projects, he salvaged equipment from a sunken petroleum tanker in the Pacific Ocean during World War II[6]. The family had moved to a home at 6035 Harwood Ave in Oakland[7], where Richard lived for the remainder of his life.
Jennie passed away 18 Jun 1933 age 51 in Oakland[8]. Richard then married her sister Miss Olga Beatrice Rotermund (1883-1988), who had been a teacher in Eureka. Richard passed away 21 Nov 1954 age 76 in Oakland[9][6][10].
Research Note
The search engine at ancestry.com conflates Richard's father with Philander Porter (1828-1899) who was born three years later, also in Medina, Ohio, causing there to be erroneous family trees there. These are not the same person.
