William F. Porter was born about 1840[1] in Springfield[2], Kentucky. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.

[People of color in New Bedford] were not restricted as to where they could live; Black men could vote and sit on juries; and their children could attend public schools - liberties denied in almost every other city and town in the North.[3]

Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a Private and Musician in Company A of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the second[4] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 23 years old, single and working as a weaver when he enlisted on 10 October 1863 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]

Note: There is also a William D. Porter in Company A.

Company Remarks

On 24 May 1863, Private Porter was detailed to the Band.[5]
