Biography

Montagu was born in 1877. He was the son of Reginald Porch LL.M., of the Bengal Civil Service and Ann Rebecca Austin.^[1]

UK Census Date 1881: Recorded in the household of his grandparents James and Rebecca Austin in Glastonbury, Somerset, England. Aged 4. Also in the household were his uncle and aunt Amy and Stanley Austin, his three siblings Austin, Jessie and Ethelind and three servants.

His father passed away in 1886 at Puri in British India, leaving an estate valued at £5,212.

Montagu was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. While there in 1900 he joined the Imperial Yeomanry, which was a Cavalry regiment of the British Army, seeing active service as a trooper in the South African War. Returning to Oxford after the war, he graduated BA in 1902 and MA in 904.

UK Census Date 31 March 1901: Recorded in the household of his mother, along with his sister Ethelind and three servants in Weston Super Mare, Somersetshire, England. Aged 24.

Occupation: Oxford Under Graduate

In 1906 he gained a place as an officer of the Colonial Service and served in it until 1919, with most of his time spent in Africa.

Back in England he married Jennie Spencer-Churchill (nee Jerome, the widowed mother of Winston Churchill) on 1 June 1918.^[2]

It was Jennie's third marriage and she was 23 years his senior. The couple were married for three years until Jennie's death in 1921.

He married, secondly, Donna Giulia Patrizi (the only daughter of the Marchese Patrizi della Rocco) in 1926 and lived in Italy until his wife died in 1938.

He returned to Glastonbury, England where he passed away in November 1964, aged 87.^[3]
