Biography

Mary (Pople) Burt was born in Dorset, England.

Mary was christened on 17 April 1836 in Fifehead Neville, Dorset, England. She was the daughter of Henry Pople and Martha Burt. ^[1]

Mary, at the age of 15, is said to have eloped with the Gardener at Plumber Manor, John Strange.

On 04 June 1857 there was a marriage between Samuel Bird Strange, son of John Strange, and Mary People (or Pople), daughter of Henry. The marriage took place in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. ^[2]

Mary and Samuel Strange had a son, George Washington Hayden Strange, christened on 29 August 1861 in Lydlinch, Dorset, England. ^[3]

The 1861 census shows the family living at Lydlinch in a residence called Haydon. The members of the family were: ^[4]

- head Samuel Strange, age 27, farmer of 110 acres employing 3 men and 1 boy, born in Mappowder, Dorset

- wife Mary Strange, age 25, born in Lydlinch

- son George W Strange, age 0, born in Lydlinch

- dairy maid Mary Parrot, age 40, born in Hermitage, Dorset

- nursemaid Sarah Marsh, age 12, born in Haselbury Bryan, Dorset

They migrated to the United States in 1869, initially arriving in New York. It seems that their marriage ended in divorce in 1873 in Michigan, USA and Mary re-married (in Albion, Michigan) on November 13, 1877, to Charles Burt. Charles Burt was a brother of Martha Burt, Mary's mother, and was, therefore, Mary's uncle. (John Strange "went West" from St.Louis and was never heard from again.)

Mary's son, George, later married Luella White, an orphan, and had five children. Their eldest child, Charles, aged in his late 60s and living in Mobile, Alabama, USA, wrote to Mary (Pople) Cumming in Australia in 1952 and provided much of the foregoing information.^[5]
