Thomas Laurenszen Popinga, primarily known as Thomas Laurenszen, was from Groningen. He immigrated to New Netherland, where he was first recorded on July 2, 1662, as Thomas Laurenszen Popinga, when he joined the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam[1]
On June 9 1663 Thomas Laurenszen from Groeningen married Marritje Jans, widow of Cornelis Langevelt, at New Amsterdam.[2]
On 1 November 1699 he took his letter from the Dutch Church at New York
to go to Esopus[1] (Kingston). On Sept. 3, 1704, he witnessed the baptism at Kingston of his granddaughter Marrytje.[3] That is the last known record of him.[4]

I'm now leaning toward the idea that the two Aeltjes have one mother but two fathers. See this explanation: http://books.google.com/books?idacmyWWiA3pwC&pgPA430&dqcornelis+langevelt&hlen&saX&eiE73vU8SgFIqQyAS7ooDgBg&ved0CCYQ6AEwAQ#vonepage&qcornelis%20langevelt&ffalse
Thanks to Steven I may be getting the naming better. In the NA baptism transcription I am using the name Popinga appears when Thomas is witness to his first grandson Thomas' baptism(?). Is that the convention? I also think Altje and Aitje are the same person, bap. Mar. 26 1664. What do you think? If I am right then there are 5 more children (one 'blank') to add in addition to Rachel. Comment?
Re: proof, in the NA baptismal lists I can see easily (!!) the notice for Rachel on Nov. 26 1681 doesn't include the name Popinga for Thomas. How is a newbie to know?
