Biography

Birth

Bartholomew Pond was born a twin (with sister Rebecca) on 13 Apr 1736 in Branford, New Haven County, CT to Philip and Thankful Pond.[1][2]

Bartholomew, then "of Waterbury" was one of the heirs of Philip Pond who 11 May 1764 sold land in Branford.[3]

Marriage and children

Bartholomew married Luse Curtis in Waterbury on 9 Sep 1755.[4]

Luse and Bartholomew had 11 children, all born in Waterbury except for the last (Bilious):

  1. Beriah, b. 10 Aug 1757[5]
  2. Iri or Ira, b. 27 Nov 1759[6]
  3. Content, b. 28 Nov 1761[7]
  4. Zera or Zeriah, b. 24 Nov 1763[8]
  5. Sala or Sally, b. 20 Mar 1766[9], bp. 1766 at the First Congregational Church of Plymouth (5 to 10 miles north of Waterbury)[10]
  6. Rebecca, b. 5 Jun 1768[11], bp. 1 May 1768 at the First Congregational Church of Plymouth.[12]
  7. Lucy, b. 10 May 1770[13], bp. 1 July 1770 at the First Congregational Church of Plymouth.[14]
  8. Jesse, b. 7 Jul 1772[15], bp. 28 August 1772 at the First Congregational Church of Plymouth.[16]
  9. Samuel, b. 24 Jan 1775[17]
  10. Philip, b. 1777[18], d. 3 Mar. 1853 in Rochester, Monroe Couny, NY[19]
  11. Bilious, b. 27 Jun 1781 in Plymouth (10 miles to the north of Waterbury), bp. 2 Sep 1781[20][21]

Service during the Revolutionary War

A summary of the military service of Bartholomew and some of his sons is provided in Pioneer history of Camden, Oneida County, New York.[22] Bartholomew "belonged to the minute men", then enlisted for one year. Beriah served from 1776 to 1783. Iri served in 1777.

Migration to Oneida County, New York

The US census of 1790 found Bartholomew with a family of 8 still living in Litchfield County, Connecticut (specifically, in Watertown, about 5 miles north of Waterbury).[23]

According to local tax rolls, by 1799 sons Zereiah, Jesse and Lemuel had migrated to Augusta.[24]

By 1800, however, the census showed him living in Paris, Oneida County, NY. His household was enumerated immediately before the households of his sons Philip Pond (then age 16 to 26 years old) and Jesse Pond (then age 26 to 45 years of age).[25] A land record from 1801[26] showed Bartholomew and Lucy Pond to reside in "Paris" (Clinton, Oneida County, NY).

Death

Bartholomew died in Camden in 1810.[27]

Hello Rob,

Bartholomew is my 5th Great Grandfather.

posted by Kelly Pond
Hello Rob, I am a descendent of the Ponds through my great-grandmother Hester Pond. Bartholomew 1736-1810 is my fourth great-grandfather. Is it true that the Ponds have a royal connection?
