Harry was the second son (and child) of William Starling Pond and Sarah (Dickerson)Pond and one of ten children. He was born in 1859 in Blakeney, Norfolk, England and baptised on 3/11/1859 at St Nicholas Church in Blakeney.

The censuses of 1861 and 1871 put him still in Blakeney but by 1881, aged 21 he was a sailor and visiting the Mitchison family in Lambeth in London at the time of the census.

On 19 July 1885 Harry married Mary Alice Hortense Southgate at Hindringham in Norfolk England. His first son, Cecil Harry was born on 25 July 1886 and baptised in Blakeney. His second son Benjamin K was born on 5 Jan 1888 at Wells-next-the-sea in Norfolk, England.

On April 30 1888 Harry's father William died in Blakeney aged 54. The next we hear of Harry, in May 1888, he is on the 3410 ton Orizaba sailing from London to Sydney NSW as 4th Mate . The Orizaba arrived in Sydney in May so it must have left London before Harry's father died. He then embarked upon a life of sailing backwards and forwards from one Australian port to another, sometimes as a passenger, sometimes as a crew member , obviously getting what ever jobs he could, ranging from fireman to cabin steward to 3rd cook. On one voyage when he was a passenger on the Peregrine travelling from Brisbane to Sydney in ?1922 or possibly 1912 (difficult to read) he was apparently accompanied by his son Cecil. Later, it appears that he survived on painting jobs in Queensland and apparently drank the profits, becoming involved in a few brawls which caused him to appear before the local magistrate for unruly behaviour on several occasions.

Harry ultimately died in Queensland on 3rd Nov. 1933. I cant find out where or where he was living at this time.

Update His wife Mary Alice Hortense remarried on 31 July 1889 stating that she was a widow ( I have no idea whether this was to save face or because she genuinely believed so. With children to bring up and no job she may well have been fairly desperate). Her second husband was Thomas Hodgson (b.1830) and they had a daughter , Mabel in 1894. Mary (as she was now known) apparently died in Norwich in 1941. I know that Benjamin was in WW1 and ended up as a POW .

Update 10/3/21 Thanks to Michelle Tennens for finding this information for me Harry was taken into the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum on North Stradbroke Island in Moreton Bay, Queensland on 8 April 1930. He was discharged on 11 August 1930, but was readmitted from St George on 29 November 1932 and remained there until his death on 3 November 1933. The cause of death was stated as senility and heart failure . The notes on the Asylum entry state that he was a single man with no known relatives other than his parents. As he was taken in as a result of being senile and poverty -stricken, its possible that he had forgotten his family I guess.
