Biography

Research note

Most likely this profile is a mixup of Ragnvald "Rettelbeine" Haraldson and Rogvolod who established himself at Polatsk in the mid-10th century and who is said to have come from what is today Sweden. This profile should continue to be the one of Rogvolog of Polatsk and I think all connections to parents, siblings and wife should be disconnected. Andersson-4409 13:07, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

Disconnected profile from parents Halfdansson-259 and Svåsedatter-1. Andersson-4409 07:51, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

About Ragnvald "Rettelbeine" Haraldson: According to the book "Från Oden till Vasa" by Lars Ulwencreutz, Ragnvald "Rettelbeine" Haraldson was the son of Harald Hårfagre and his wife Snöfrid, daughter of "finnen" Svase. He is said to have been a "trollkarl" which perhaps can mean sorcerer/wizard/shaman and he is said to have been burned to death in Hadeland (where he was king).

In the book Flatøybok by Jon Håkonsson he is said to be one of the persons burned by Eirik Blodøks (Eirik I Blodøks Haraldsson).

About this profile; Ragnvald/Rogvolod with unknown LNAB
In Nestorkrøniken he is known as Рогъволодъ, Rogvolod, a Slavic version of the Nordic name Ragnvald. It says he came from "across the sea" which would suggest he came from the Nordic countries, most probably from Sweden.

Old info:

Rogvolod settled in Polotsk in the mid-10th century. Some say Rogneda or Rahneda was his wife, others say she was his daughter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogneda_of_Polotsk.

Relationships between historical figures could have been simplified or even fabricated in the text to give the impression that succession remained within the same family….Precise chronology is also difficult to assess from the Sagas….The conclusion must be that the tight family network described in the Sagas is unlikely to be correct and that the relationships shown below should be treated with considerable caution.

  • Harald Halfdansson, his father here, was given the birth date of 854, @ 80 years earlier. It is extremely doubtful the two are father and son.
  • He cannot be the child of this mother with a birth date of 862, as well.
Death: 963 Ukraine
Name: Rogvolod /of POLOTSK/Source: #S994
Ancestor of Anne of Kiev, Queen of France.
Occupation: polotzkin Ruhtinas

Olafsson-270 and Polotsk-2 appear to represent the same person because: Reasonably clear duplicates due to death location. LNAB is unknown, is best merged inot polotsk.
Rogvolod-2 and Polotsk-2 appear to represent the same person because: All records of Rogvolod indicate the years and names associated with the Polotsk profile. There is no Rogvolod known from the indicated year. Rogvolod ought to be merged into Polotsk.

Note

Harald Halfdansson, his father here, was given the birth date of 854, @ 80 years earlier. It is extremely doubtful the two are father and son. *He cannot be the child of this mother with a birth date of 862, making her 76 years old at his birth. Should the parental links be removed
