Biography

Marie Poirier was born about 1753 in Acadie, daughter of Abraham Poirier and Marie Josephe Bourg. Lacking a birth document for Marie, we rely on other records to find her parents and approximate year of birth.[1]

Joseph DUPUY, son of Justinien & Anne GIRUAR, Acadians, married on 7 Feb 1774 to Marie POIREÉ, daughter of Abraham & Maria Josephe BOURG. Witnesses not given. Recorded at St. James Catholic Church, St. James, LA (SJA-1, 44a).

She arrived in Louisiana by age 10; appears on the Cabanocé census, 1769, left [east] bank, an orphan, age 16, with family of Michel POIRIER.[2] </nowiki>#99

Michel POIRIER, 31;
Marie CORMIER, wife, 24;
Pierre POIRIER, son, 3;
Joseph, son, 8 months;
Marie [POIRIER], orphan, 16.

When she was about 20 or 21, Marie married Joseph Dupuis age 22 on 7 Feb 1774 in St. James Parish, Louisiana. [3]

Their children were:

  1. Marie Monique Dupuis
  2. Pierre Dupuis
  3. Celeste Dupuis
  4. Michel Dupuis.

In St.-Jacques census, 1777, left [east] bank, age 21, with husband & 2 daughters.[4]

Joseph Dupuis, 24; Marie Poirier, his wife, 21; Marie, sa fille, 2; Monique, sa fille, 5 months.
Also on the census is Marie Cormier, with Poirier children: Pierre, 10, Joseph, 8, Margueritte, 6 and Rozallie, 3. Note: these appear to be the children of Michel Poirier and the family Marie lived with as an orphan.

In St.-Jacques census, 1779, unnamed, with husband & 3 others[5]

Joseph Dupuis, 5 whites: 4 rice, 15 corn. Joseph was a volunteer of the Company of Militia of La Fourche des Chetimachas. He is on the list of fuseleers [sic].

Marie died before 17 Feb 1806 in Louisiana aged ~52. She is noted deceased on daughter Rosalie's marriage record dated 17 February 1806[6]

DUPUIS, Rosalie - of St. James on River (major daughter of Joseph DUPUY & dec. Marie POIRIER) m. 17 Feb. 1806 Joseph TERRIOT - of St. James parish on the River (major son of Thomas & Agnes DEGLE) Wits: Louis GARRY, Hyacinthe JACQUET. Fr. Gabriel ISABEY (SM Ch.: v.5, #52)

Research Notes

No Marie Bourg or either of her parents are listed in the 1763 census of Acadians in Maryland. None of the Dupuis families had her listed.[7]

If her parents married in 1753 in Acadie, she would likely have been born before the remarriage in Restigouche. Acadie most likely, see Karen Theriot Reader [8]

If she was orphaned in 1769 in Louisiana, why did her parents abandon her to go as an orphan to Louisiana? How did her father remarry, or at least have a marriage recorded as if it was his first, in Restigouche in 1761?

Her mother probably died and often fathers couldn't care for children while they labored, particularly if there were no older siblings to help. These were very difficult and chaotic times.
