Biography

Ethel Ernestine Pockley was born on 12th March 1868 at Pictonville, St Leonards, New South Wales, Australia. She was the daughter of Robert Pockley and Selina Antill.^[1] She overcame a bout of scarlet fever in 1869.

Ethel trained and became a nurse. In 1888, the centenary of the colony of New South Wales, at the Exhibition of Women's Industries, Ethel received the Bronze Medal "for skill as Nurse of the Sick". Selina took the first prize and Silver Medal for "Best lot of 24 cut roses, no two of same name" and Ella second prize for "Best lot of 12 cut roses". In 1889, at 21 years of age, Ethel resigned as Matron of the North Shore Hospital.

She married Henry Hinder on 3rd March 1892 at St Thomas' Church of England, North Sydney, New South Wales.^[2]

Ethel passed away from complications with the birth of her second child on 28th September 1895 at Ashfield, New South Wales,^[3] The baby, Ethel's namesake, also passed away some weeks afterward. Being left with a two-year old child to raise, Henry later married Ethel's younger sister, Enid.
